What you actually keep on a sale after the platform's cut, shipping and what you paid for the item.
Platform fees change often and vary by category and seller level. The example percentages are starting points only — check your platform's current fee page and type in your real rate.
Most marketplaces take a percentage of the total the buyer pays (often including shipping) plus a small per-order fee. Add what you paid for the item, your actual postage and supplies, and a $40 sale can easily net under $20. Knowing that number before you list is how you decide what's worth buying at the thrift store.
Reselling profit is usually taxable income. Many sellers set aside a percentage of every sale — see the self-employment tax set-aside calculator.
Log every sale and it works out real profit after cost of goods, platform fees and shipping, with monthly and per-platform totals and a running tax set-aside. Excel and Google Sheets.
Profit = sale price + shipping charged - platform fees - what you paid - your shipping cost - supplies.
It depends on your time and volume; many resellers look for items that at least double their money (100% ROI) after fees and shipping.
